The oceans stopped waiting for us to fix it, so something else took the helm.
A century after the water rose, humanity lives light: floating terraces of greenhouse domes, orchards and wind spires anchored over drowned coastlines, sailing between them because the sea decides the schedule now.
The orcas ended the argument. Augmented, networked and unmistakably in charge, they hold the shipping lanes, the fisheries and the currents, and they govern them better than we ever did. The Rise of the Orcagarchs is the story of the bargain that saved the world and the humans learning to live as junior partners in it.
They took control. Then they saved us.
The century between the first implant and the first treaty, told in one continuous loop. Every technology we built to study them, they eventually used to run the ocean.
Trackers, hydrophones, translation models, built to listen in.
The pods learned the channel faster than the labs reading it.
Shipping, fisheries and currents, held, and held better.
2126: humanity signs on as the junior partner, and the sea recovers.
Oceania is one city in two halves. Above the line: sun, sail cloth, gardens under glass, the smell of citrus and salt. Below it: the blue dark where the real government swims. Everything that matters in this world happens at the surface where the two meet.
Rings of floating farmland stepped down to the waterline, glass domes over orchards, solar decks, pines that were saved from the drowned coast and replanted on pontoons. Boats tie up at the kitchen door; every household grows part of the city's dinner.
Warm light on wet stone, turbines turning slow, and the constant low knock of hulls against fenders.
Below the hulls, where the light gives out and the pods run the lanes. Armoured flanks stitched with signal lights, whole conversations passing in clicks the surface can only pick up as weather. Humans are invited down once a season, and are always the ones asking.
Cold blue pressure, godrays going to nothing, and a shape bigger than your boat holding station beside you.
The origin piece, how the pact was struck and what it cost the people who signed it.
Season one on the terraces: one family, one boat, one season of negotiating with the deep.
Sail the lanes, trade with the pods, keep your terrace fed, a city that answers to the tide.
Descend to the council yourself and hold still while something enormous decides about you.
